The GNW pylon is fabricated from pre-aged corten steel and acrylic. Illumination is provided along the edges using light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Careful planning and computer modelling was required to ensure sufficient structural support within the pylon, that all the corten steel/acrylic fit together properly and all the acrylic faces would illuminate without any hot spots. By artificially accelerating the rusting/aging of the corten steel, the pylon has a “weathered” look and matches other corten steel items on-site. Laser-cut stainless steel tenant panels (with a milky finish and mounted on standoffs) completed the work.
